Weather/Rainfall Winter has started well, with 33 mm of rain and an average maximum temperature just over 20 degrees. Fingers crossed the weather plays nicely over the next couple of months so we can get through winter without too many issues.
Greens The greens are performing as expected. They are speeding up and staying nice and firm. There is still a little bit of growth around thanks to the milder temperatures, along with the odd sign of disease, but this has been cleaned up quickly. The greens will be verti-drained with solid tines to help reduce compaction and improve air and water movement through the profile.
Tees The tees are in their usual winter condition. The couch has slowed right down now that the nights are cooler, and soil temperatures have dropped.
We ask all golfers to please take a little extra care to repair and fill divots on the tees.
Fairways The fairways were excellent through June. Turf has been laid on a few more bare patches caused by Ground Pearl, and there are some promising signs on the 17th where turf was laid, with a big drop in Ground Pearl numbers. Biological control has been underway in this area for the past six months. A run of dry weather would be ideal to help keep the fairways in good shape through winter.
Bunkers The sand in the 10th bunkers has been replaced as planned. While this work was being done, the drain was also replaced with fresh gravel and new pipe. The face has been lowered and re-turfed as well.
We ask all golfers to please keep off the new grass as much as possible while it gets established. The 6th bunkers are next, with sand to be removed, drains cleaned out and the face lowered.

Weather/Rainfall The course is the driest it has been for some time, with just over 14mm of rain recorded in April. We also experienced above-average temperatures of more than 25&deg;C.
Greens The greens have performed extraordinarily well so far this autumn. There is no sign of pest or disease, and green speed is averaging 10 feet. As is typical at this time of year, the greens are firming up and growth is slowing. Slower growth means slower recovery, so please remember to repair pitch marks. Selective herbicide has been applied to the green edges to control kikuyu encroachment. April also saw some light aeration work to improve water and oxygen movement through the soil profile.
Tees The tees held up very well through April, but as we approach the end of the month and cooler nights, growth and recovery will slow. Applications of selective herbicide to control kikuyu encroachment, along with a pre-emergent treatment to control poa annua, were made in April. This will be evident on a few tees as small patches of kikuyu turn yellow and die back. Once again, particularly as growth slows heading into and throughout winter, please take care of the tees by repairing divots. There is a sand bucket on every tee, so please use it to fill your divot.
Fairways The fairways have remained in very good condition through April and into May. Regular fertiliser and pigment applications have helped retain good colour and growth. Some turfing has been carried out on a couple of fairways to cover bare areas. On the 4th fairway, we have cored some couch areas and moved those cores to other bare sections to improve coverage. The benefits of this turfing and coring work will become more visible after winter as we move back into warmer weather. Restoring full coverage is an ongoing process, much like painting the Harbour Bridge, particularly when managing Ground Pearl.
Bunkers The bunkers held up nicely in the dry weather during April. Sand in the new 11th hole bunkers, while at the correct depth, has become a little soft and &ldquo;fluffy&rdquo;, with the dry conditions contributing to this. Efforts are being made to ensure the faces are compacted and the sand is kept moist to help prevent balls from plugging in the faces.
A different style of rake has been placed in these bunkers to help golfers rake and smooth this type of sand more effectively.
Other Tree work on the 11th hole took place in May, with a focus on the tree line between the 10th and 11th holes to improve light penetration. This will be followed by work on the trees on and around the 4th tee.
Drain clearing on the 4th hole is scheduled to take place on 18 May, weather permitting.

Dear Members and local residents, I am writing to provide a further update on the ongoing Metropolitan Memorial Parks proposal to convert Carnarvon Golf Course into cemetery / memorial park space. There has still been no announced decision by the NSW Government, and our lease remains in place until 2035. However, there have been several important developments over the past week that I wanted to share with you. Following previous advice from Metropolitan Memorial Parks, we now have confirmation from Minister Kamper&rsquo;s office that MMP has finalised its collation and analysis of the feedback received during its community consultation process. The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure &ndash; Crown Lands has advised that both the report and the timing of its public release remain subject to ongoing Government consideration. While this does not provide the transparency we have been looking for, it does confirm that the MMP consultation report has been completed and is now part of the Government&rsquo;s decision-making process. As members would be aware, we have continued to call for the full consultation report to be released publicly. It is disappointing, though not completely unexpected, that our GIPA (GIPA is an acronym for the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW). It is the legislation that governs how the public can access information held by government agencies in NSW) applications have been refused, particularly given the scale of community interest and the importance of the proposed decision to the future of the Club, local residents and the broader community. The Department has refused access to documents on the basis that they are considered Cabinet information. We have lodged a review of that decision. We met this week with Chris Rath, Shadow Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, to brief him on the current situation and seek further support from the Opposition. The meeting was both positive and constructive and adds to our ongoing advocacy with Government, Opposition and crossbench representatives, including previous engagement with Minister Steve Kamper, Steph Cooke, Jason Clare, Mark Banasiak, Lynda Voltz, Cumberland City Council and others. We will continue to pursue every reasonable political and community avenue available to ensure Carnarvon&rsquo;s position is clearly understood and strongly represented. Mr. Rath was receptive to the concerns raised and we discussed the broader issues with the proposal, including the loss of significant recreational open space, the proximity of the site to residential homes, flooding and drainage concerns, the location near major roads, cultural and community sensitivities and the lack of transparency around alternative sites that may have been considered.&nbsp; Several potential next steps were discussed, including placing questions on notice to Government.&nbsp; Mr. Rath also indicated he would be willing to assist in seeking further clarity around the status of the MMP report, if / when it will be released and what other sites have been considered. Carnarvon remains an active, viable and a heavily used community facility. This is not simply a question of golf. It is about preserving 45 hectares of open green space, community recreation, local amenity, health and wellbeing, and the long-term liveability of Lidcombe, Auburn and the surrounding area. We remain extremely grateful for the strong support received from members, local residents, Cumberland City Council, community groups, local representatives and everyone who has continued to advocate for the protection of Carnarvon. &nbsp; Our immediate focus remains:

<li>continuing to push for the public release of the MMP consultation report</li>
<li>pursuing the review of the GIPA decision</li>
<li>working with Chris Rath and other Parliamentary representatives to seek further answers from Government</li>
<li>maintaining engagement with Minister Kamper&rsquo;s office, Crown Lands and other relevant stakeholders</li>
<li>continuing to work with Cumberland City Council and local representatives</li>
<li>supporting the Pink Army gathering outside Parliament House on Tuesday morning</li>
<li>ensuring the community remains informed and ready to respond if a decision is announced</li>
</ul>
At this stage, no final Government decision has been announced. However, the matter is clearly progressing through Government consideration and it remains important that we stay engaged, coordinated and visible. Pink Army Gathering &ndash; Tuesday 5th of May from 8am outside NSW Parliament House Members and local residents are strongly encouraged to attend the planned Pink Army gathering outside NSW Parliament House on Tuesday morning. This is another important opportunity to show Government that the community remains united, visible and determined to protect Carnarvon Golf Club and the surrounding open green space. If you are able to attend, please wear pink and bring family, friends, neighbours or anyone else who supports preserving Carnarvon as public recreational open space. Carnarvon Golf Club began in 1927 when the game was played on an informal basis before being regularised at the first Annual General Meeting in August, 1928. The first President was Alderman W.R. Atkinson of Lidcombe Council and one of the Vice-Presidents was the Hon. J.T. Lang, Premier of New South Wales.The course which measured 4277 yards with a bogey of 75, was situated on the northern side of Parramatta Road and covered the following area : <ul><li>Western Boundary: Wetherill St. </li><li>Northern Boundary: Derby St.</li><li>Eastern Boundary: Haslam’s Creek and Hill Road.</li><li>Southern Boundary: Adderley St. Day St. then Parramatta Road to Hill Road.</li></ul>The area covered by the course included vacant proposed factory sites, unmade roads, an agistment paddock of the State Abbatoirs and portion of Southian’s dairy. The greens were the natural grasses mowed at the weekends by the members’ own push mowers. The holes were jam tins. The course was named after a large sign, visible from Parramatta Road, advertising factory sites for sale on Carnarvon Hill Estate. This sign is regarded as the first clubhouse as members drove nails into it on which to hang their coats and other paraphernalia. The first real clubhouse, known as “the Shack, was erected in 1929 on the corner of Day and Derby Streets and comprised two rooms, one 10 feet by 10 feet for members and the other 8 feet by 8 feet for associates with a 9 feet by 4 feet verandah. In 1931 the old Auburn Ambulance Station was purchased, towed to the site and added to The Shack. As tenure over the original course was tenuous at best a move was made to what became known as the “old course” in late 1932 with the official opening in 1933.The old course was located to the north of Fariola St. and occupied two paddocks owned by Newington State Hospital and a paddock to the south of Holker St. owned by Lidcombe Council. The lease from Newington State Hospital was for fifteen years under permissive occupancy tenure and covered tees and greens only. The greens were enclosed with post and rail fences as protection from our bovine co-tenants of the hospital dairy herd. The clubhouse was moved to the northern side of the eastern end of Fariola St in 1933 when extensive additions and alterations were effected. Things moved along swimmingly for the next ten years or so until the outbreak of World WarII. Our biggest disaster came on 8 March, 1943 when the clubhouse and the top paddock were taken over by the US Navy necessitating yet another move. It was decided to continue with a nine hole course consisting of the bottom paddock for seven holes with the remaining two holes in the council paddock. This became known as the Silverwater course. To accommodate a Clubhouse the committee resolved on 20 April, 1043 to purchase thecottage in Clyde St. Auburn and the adjacent eleven vacant blocks for 470 pounds Following the convention of the time it was necessary to pay 100 pounds “key money” to obtain vacant possession of the property. With renovations the cottage served as a Clubhouse until the move to the present course. The old cottage went through many years of modification, renovation, partial demolition and rebirth as a motor boat club, Auburn Businessman’s Club and is currently Dooley’s On The Water. The move to the present course was foreshadowed as early as 1943. The new course was an amalgamation of two contiguous areas separated by Walters Rd. which originally ran through from Nottinghill Rd to Joseph St. The area between Leila St. and Walters Rd. was the Lidcombe Sports and Showground and the area between Walters Rd and Amy St was the western grazing paddock of Lidcombe State Hospital for its prize winning herd of Holstein dairy cows. The areas were amalgamated, Walters Rd closed and the area leased to Carnarvon Golf Club in 1947. The course was built between the years 1947 to 1949 to a design by Arthur East. The Clubhouse was built over the same period. Due to the difficulty in obtaining building material in the post-war years the Clubhouse was built from material obtained by demolishing the Fariola St building together with the Liverpool and Lidcombe Soldiers’ Halls. The Clubhouse and new course were opened in December, 1949. Additions and renovations kept the building functional until 1998 when the Club came under increasing pressure to bring the structure up to the required standards. The cost involved was considered uneconomic considering the condition of the underpinnings. The Board voted to build a new Clubhouse and then demolish the old building. This was completed in December, 1999. Our present course presented a horticultural challenge to the earlier Committees and course superintendents as they battled with an area of poor clay based soil, gravel patches and rock outcrops. The Committee tendered for and won the contract to remove manure from the holding paddocks at Flemington Saleyards on the site of the present Flemington Markets. The contract ran from 1957 to 1963 and most fairways were covered to a depth of six to eight inches with mostly sheep manure. This was done half a fairway width at a time to enable play to continue. This combined with automatic fairway and greens watering of more recent years coupled with extensive drainage projects, has produced the lush course we have today. To quote the late C.W.Phillips President, from his address at the A.G.M. of 27th March, 1943 :- “Finally we have a good Club built by ourselves for ourselves and those we are happy to have with us and the old Carnarvon spirit will win through notwithstanding”

 We wish to maintain a dress standard commensurate with the game of golf. For men, tailored shorts and trousers, shirts must have sleeves and collars. White short socks may be worn with a length of at least 75mm above the ankle.
 Items such as football jumpers and shorts, stubbies, brief shorts, athletic shorts and singlets, tracksuits, beach attire, dirty and worn clothes are not appropriate. Any person arriving for golf not properly attired will not be allowed on the course.
 <h3>DRINKS ON THE COURSE</h3>
 A drinks cart is available for hire at a cost of $40 per hour with a minimum of 3 hours. A staff member is included in this charge to drive the cart in accordance with RSA law. All beverages must be purchased from the Club.
 <h3>BOOKINGS</h3>
 Tentative bookings will be held for a period of 10 days only, after which time the date will be released. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is to be paid with each confirmed booking. If the function proceeds, the total deposit will be credited to the customer’s account.
 Menus, beverage arrangements, entertainment, audio-visual requirements, room plans, starting and finishing times must be confirmed in writing 14 days prior to the function.
 Final numbers must be confirmed no later than 7 days prior to the day of the event. These numbers may be increased up to 48 hours prior to the day, but not decreased.

Become a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club today
The following outlines the process involved in becoming a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club.
Subscription levels are set annually by the Board each year, commencing 1 September. Subscription rates may be adjusted to reflect a pro rata amount, relative to the remaining months of the financial year.
 
1. Completing the Application Form with Application Fee
<ul>
<li>Please ensure that all sections of your application form have been completed in full. An incomplete form may delay your application.</li>
<li>Application forms are available from the reception area of the Club, or may be filled out via our online membership form.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Completed application forms can be submitted to the office in person or electronically.</li>
<li>Please note, a non-refundable application fee of $350 is required to secure a place on the Carnarvon Golf Club wait list. This excludes those applying for Intermediate 1, Junior or Sub Cadet Categories. The application fee is non-transferrable</li>
<li>Payments can be made by cheque or cash if an application is submitted in person. Applications sent by email, must make payment via credit card.</li>
<li>Applicants have 14 days from date of application to receipt the application fee, otherwise the application will be discarded.</li>

<li>Once an application form has been received, the form will be posted onto our Members' Notice Board for a period of not less than 7 days.</li>

3. Fees

<li>All new members must then pay the annual subscription or pro rata amount relative to the remaining months of the current financial year.</li>

<li>*Please be aware that the Club does not offer monthly or half yearly memberships and members must ensure that the annual subscription is always payable in full, regardless of any installment methods that may be allowed from time to time.</li>

Gerry Hyde Head Golf Professional
Gerry Hyde began his golf journey at just nine years old, developing his game through the junior ranks at Cumberland Golf Club, where he was a member from 1993 to 2000. His early dedication to the sport laid a strong foundation for a competitive career, including representing Cumberland in Major Pennants from 2002 to 2004.
In 2006, Gerry took the next step in his Professional development by becoming a trainee member of the PGA, and by 2010 he had earned full membership with the Australian PGA. His commitment to both playing and coaching has been a defining feature of his career.
Gerry joined Carnarvon Golf Club as an Assistant Professional in 2012, where he spent over a decade honing his skills, mentoring players, and contributing to the club&rsquo;s golfing community. <h4>Weather/Rainfall</h4>
Summer has officially concluded; however, March&rsquo;s conditions closely resembled those of February, with an average maximum temperature of 28&deg;C&mdash;only slightly lower. A total of 85mm of rainfall was recorded, which maintained soil moisture and ensured the dams remain full.
<h4>Greens</h4>
The greens have performed exceptionally well, exhibiting full recovery following the previous month&rsquo;s renovations. With the onset of autumn, vegetative growth has begun to slow, resulting in increased green speeds, which averaged 9&rsquo;7&rdquo; for March. Selective herbicide applications have been recommended along kikuyu perimeters in order to manage encroachment. The greens remain free from any disease or pest activity and are in excellent condition moving into the new season. In light of the recent rainfall, solid tining is scheduled for April to promote oxygenation within the soil profile.
<h4>Tees</h4>
The tees are currently displaying optimal coverage and health as autumn approaches. A decrease in growth and recovery rates is anticipated with the arrival of cooler temperatures. Members are respectfully reminded to maintain the quality of the tees by repairing and filling divots, particularly on the Par 3 tees.
<h4>Fairways</h4>
The fairways are in outstanding condition. It should be noted, however, that Corellas have been observed causing damage to the closely mown turf. Members are encouraged, when possible, to discourage these birds from remaining on the fairways by guiding them towards the rough, thereby helping to preserve turf quality.
<h4>Planned Works</h4>
There are plans to commence sand replacement and repair of selected bunker faces. These tasks are currently postponed pending repairs to the drainage pipe traversing the 4th fairway. It is anticipated that this work will proceed in late April, once vegetative growth slows and staffing levels normalise after the run of short weeks. Initial repairs to the 4th fairway drainage will be temporary until a jet truck can be engaged to conduct a comprehensive clearance of the main line.

Following the January 2026 update, we have received further direct communication from Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP). This provides important clarity on the consultation feedback process, and I wanted to share it with you immediately.
&nbsp;
Current Situation as of 20 March 2026
&nbsp;
Yesterday (19 March 2026) MMP CEO Denise Ora advised: &ldquo;MMP has now completed their collation and consolidation of the consultation feedback and have provided this to the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She confirmed that their website will be updated with this wording. However, when asked whether this also means the report has been supplied to the Minister, Ms. Ora stated she &ldquo;can&rsquo;t comment that it means it is with the Minister yet&rdquo; and can &ldquo;only comment that we have provided to the department (that is truly all I know). That is the process.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She also undertook to advise on any additional updates &ldquo;as and when I can.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
No timeline was provided for the public release of the report or for sharing it with key stakeholders (including Carnarvon Golf Club), despite the earlier commitment from MMP Chairman Ken Morrison. This will be the question we continue to ask.
&nbsp;
The proposal itself remains under active review with no final decision made by Minister Kamper or the Government. Our lease remains secure until 2035, the parliamentary petition debate and Cumberland City Council&rsquo;s call for a Portfolio Committee No. 4 inquiry are still live, and community opposition remains strong and coordinated.

<h2>Weather and Rainfall</h2>
Hooley dooley, what a ride it has been this past month. While the average maximum temperature hovered just over 30 degrees, which might not seem too extreme, the humidity was relentless and made conditions challenging. February brought an impressive 190mm of rain, with a staggering 138mm falling within just over two hours right before the Carnarvon Cup. As a result, by the end of summer our main dams were completely full, and the course profile was thoroughly waterlogged. Here&rsquo;s hoping for a much drier Autumn ahead.
<h2>Greens</h2>
Despite the difficult weather, the greens have thrived and continued to improve. There is now full coverage across all green surfaces, and the plant health is excellent. The combination of warmth, rainfall, and humidity typically creates ideal conditions for pests and disease, but our greens have remained free from both. As anticipated, green speeds dipped slightly but stayed above the 9&rsquo;6&rdquo; benchmark.
Renovations were carried out under tough conditions and went as well as could be expected. The greens were verti-drained using 8mm hollow tines, then lightly sanded, rolled, and had soil amendments added. Subsequent rainfall helped to wash in the last of the sand, and we were able to cut the greens at 4mm just three days later. The cutting height will be gradually reduced to the standard 3-3.5mm over the coming days.
<h2>Tees</h2>
Couch grass has flourished in the current climate, which suits its preference for heat, rain, and humidity. As a result, the tees are in excellent condition, boasting full cover and a thick, healthy sward. New turf areas on holes 3 and 12 were opened for play in early February. Unfortunately, these areas suffered considerable damage from members, who failed to properly care for the turf, rarely filling divots with sand. Because of this, the new turf areas have been withdrawn from regular play. The team has worked hard to prepare and maintain these areas, as they have with all tees, making the situation especially disappointing.
<h2>Fairways</h2>
Like the couch grass, the Kikuyu fairways have responded positively to February&rsquo;s climate. To manage the vigorous growth, mowing frequency was increased to three times a week, alongside regular nutrition and applications of plant growth regulator. However, the drain area on the 4th fairway has become problematic due to a completely blocked stormwater pipe. We are actively working behind the scenes to identify the best solution for this issue.
<h2>Bunkers</h2>
The bunkers held up well until the heavy rainfall at the end of the month, after which they suffered some damage and loss of sand. We will be working through the bunkers to repair damage and replace the washed-out sand. On a positive note, the new bunkers on holes 11 and 9 performed exceptionally well; the recently installed drainage systems proved effective, as barely a grain of sand was out of place.
Members are reminded to avoid walking up the face of these bunkers and to always enter and exit from the lowest point.
